Boxes

Nothing exhausts me faster than someone that just wants to argue with me.

99.9% of the time, I can see multiple sides of a situation. I understand deeply that right and wrong are just a matter of perspective.

Arguing to be right is never seeing multiple sides. It’s seeing one side.

As much as I love black and white, I have always been acutely aware that there is a wide variety of colors and variations of color in this life. For a long time, it made it really difficult to understand why people would want to fit everything into black or white. Why was that the only option?

Most things, like colors- don’t fit into one box. Especially when it comes to human behavior, the brain, life experiences etc. etc.

Yet people try so hard to fit everything into one box.

It’s exhausting. The need to be able to fit everything into “where it belongs” is so limiting- and listen, people will SWEAR that they don’t do this but watch the way they react when they don’t know how to classify or explain something and it will show you that they do in fact, crave the comfort of labels and boxes.

It’s so interesting to see the growth and the struggle that happens when you go from wanting to fit in so desperately – to not wanting to fit into any one thing. Yet it can feel unsettling when finding yourself in the struggle between “how do I explain this while not putting myself into a box”.

I get it.

I do.

It’s easier, more comfortable when things just fit nicely- but that isn’t the reality of the world.

Getting comfortable in the gray areas – getting comfortable in the discomfort – and trusting that this too, will find its way, isn’t for the faint of heart.

It’s for the path pavers.

It’s for the dreamers.

It’s for the ones that crave an entirely different way of life.

I understand the fear, I just don’t live there anymore.

We thrive in the deeper conversations. We thrive in the open space where certainty isn’t required and curiosity is welcomed instead. Because that’s where the growth is. That’s where the freedom is. That’s where the parts of ourselves we’ve been trying so hard to explain finally get to exist without needing permission.

Maybe the goal was never to fit into a box.

Maybe it was to become comfortable enough to stop needing one.

Allow yourself to sit in the gray. Let yourself question. Let yourself change your mind. Let yourself become someone who can hold two seemingly opposing truths at the same time.

Life is meant to be experienced in color.
