The Girl on the Roof

When I was a kid, I would climb up onto the roof of our shed and write for hours.

It was so peaceful up on that roof.

I could get absolutely lost in what I was writing.

The view of the field felt like it went on forever.

The sky was wide over the top of it.

I loved every single thing about it.

Eventually, the moment would come when all the words had flown out of my fingers.

I would shut my notebook, lean back against the roof, and stare out at the sky.

It felt infinite.

Like it all just went on forever.

It made me feel so small, in a good way.

Like anything was possible.

Back then, I had no idea where life would take me.

I didn’t know about the fear that would eventually find its way in.

I didn’t know about all the things that were coming my way.

But somehow, through all of it, I came right back here.

Sitting on the roof.

Writing.

And when the words are gone, I lean back and look at the sky.

I feel small again.

In the best way possible.

I am a writer.

Just like I always dreamed I would be.

I have beautiful souls around me.

I have a life that younger me couldn’t have possibly pictured.

There were so many things along the way that almost made me miss it.

But everything that was somehow brought me to everything that is.

And I am grateful.

For every piece of this journey.

For the little girl on the roof who believed anything was possible.

And for the woman who found her way back to her.
